Hancock, NY—This Veterans Day, we proudly recognize Shaun Shannon, a man whose life reflects a deep commitment to both his country and his hometown. Shaun has dedicated much of his life to serving others—not only through his military service but also in his dual roles as a staff member at Hancock Central School and as the mayor of Hancock.
A Life Rooted in Hancock and Military Service
Shaun was born and raised in Hancock, where he continues to live and serve today. Aside from a brief period away for his military service and a few years spent in Penfield, NY, Shaun has spent his life in Hancock, giving back to the community that has always been his home. His journey began when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March of 1986, shortly before graduating from high school. After completing boot camp in San Diego, he trained as an aviation machinist mate—a role that tasked him with the specialized work of jet engine maintenance. This critical position took Shaun to various locations, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he served for three years on one of the U.S. military’s few bases in a communist country.
Reflecting on his experiences, Shaun shares that his military service taught him valuable life lessons, particularly the importance of respect for the chain of command and the deep bonds formed with fellow servicemen and women. “The friendships you make in the service are something you never forget,” he notes. Shaun, who comes from a long line of military service, is the third generation of his family to serve in the U.S. Navy, following in the footsteps of relatives who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Transition to Civic Service in Hancock
After his service, Shaun returned to Hancock, where he found a new calling in local government and education. For the past two years, he has served as Hancock’s mayor, following 16 years as a dedicated trustee. In his capacity as mayor, Shaun’s goal is to foster a strong sense of community and to ensure that Hancock remains a welcoming, resilient place for all residents. Shaun has also worked in the maintenance department at HCS for 23 years. His role at Hancock Central School further reflects his commitment to the community’s future, as he works to support the education and growth of the next generation.
Beyond his professional commitments, Shaun is a family man who enjoys spending time outdoors. He shares his love of hunting, fishing, and family time with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and 3 year old granddaughter, with another grandchild expected in December.
The Significance of Veterans Day and a Message to Future Generations
Veterans Day holds special meaning for Shaun, not only as a veteran but also as someone who understands the sacrifices made by those who serve. Recently, he had the opportunity to listen to students at the elementary school rehearsing for their Veterans Day performance—a moment that, as he describes, was both moving and a proud reminder of the community’s respect for its veterans. He encourages young people to consider military service, offering a message of hope and challenge: “If you're up for the challenge, by all means, enlist. Try it. Even two, three, or four years can teach you so much, and you may find it’s something you want to commit to long-term.”
Shaun also honors Hancock’s strong veteran community, which includes residents who served in Vietnam, as well as remembering the late John Fish, a World War II veteran who was beloved by many in Hancock.
A Legacy of Service and Community Building
Shaun Shannon’s journey—from the Navy to local government and school support—exemplifies what it means to serve one’s country and community. His story is a reminder that commitment to service does not end with the military but can continue in various forms, from public office to supporting a school’s daily operations. As mayor, school worker, and veteran, Shaun stands as a role model for all, demonstrating that a life dedicated to service is a life that enriches the entire community.
As we celebrate Veterans Day this year, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Shaun Shannon and to ALL veterans who have served our country. Through his work and his legacy, Shaun continues to inspire future generations to contribute, serve, and support the communities they call home.
