Greetings Hancock School Community,
I am writing to provide you with an update on the water remediation efforts in the District Office. During the remediation efforts, asbestos-positive, non-friable mastic was discovered under the wood wall paneling. Non-friable mastic is a durable, adhesive material commonly used in construction to bond tiles or flooring. When it contains asbestos, the fibers are securely bound within the material, making it less likely to release harmful fibers into the air unless it is cut, or sanded. With proper handling and precautions during removal, non-friable mastic can be safely managed without posing a risk to health. In keeping with our unwavering commitment to the health and safety of our students, staff, and community, the Hancock Central School District in partnership with ServePro and Sunstream Corporation has developed a comprehensive abatement plan to address this issue promptly and safely.
The set up of this project will begin on Friday, February 14, 2025, and is expected to take two days to complete. To facilitate this work, the following measures will be implemented:
10 days prior to the project asbestos removal notices will be posted on all exterior entryways of the Middle School/High School per regulation.
On Friday, February 14, the single point of entry will be temporarily relocated to the front of the HS/MS to accommodate the setup process.
The second-floor entrance and hallway, outside of the district office will be blocked off with a hard wall and sealed with plastic to contain the work area.
All staff, walkers, bus riders, drop offs, and self transported students will enter and exit through the first floor Main entrance on Friday, February 14th.
No abatement work will be performed while the building is occupied The abatement process will begin after regular hours on Friday, February 14th.
Monday, February 17, 2025, has been designated as an additional workday, if necessary.
Air monitoring will occur throughout and after the abatement process to confirm the air quality meets acceptable standards. The building will only be reoccupied once air monitoring results confirm an acceptable level of 0.01 f/cc or lower, as required.
We will provide the community with an update as our team proceeds with this work. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.
