Military Voter Information
Military voters who are qualified voters of the School District may apply for a military ballot by requesting an application from the District Clerk at (607) 637-1301 or twadeson@hancock.stier.org. For a military voter to be issued a military ballot, the District Clerk must have received a valid ballot application no later than 5:00 pm on April 25, 2025. In a request for a military ballot application or ballot, the military voter may indicate their preference for receiving the application or ballot by mail, facsimile transmission, or electronic mail. Completed military ballots must be received by the School District by 5:00 p.m. on May 20, 2025 in order to be counted.
Early Voter and Absentee Ballots
An application for early mail voter and absentee ballot may be applied for at the Office of the Clerk/District Office, 67 Education Lane, Hancock, New York 13783. Such application must be received by the District Clerk at least seven days before the vote set in this notice if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the vote if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the absentee voter. Early mail and absentee ballots must be received in the Office of the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m. on the day of the vote.
A list of all persons to whom early mail and absentee voters’ ballots have been issued shall be available for public inspection during regular office hours which are between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of qualifications of a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating reasons for the challenge. Such written challenge shall be transmitted by the Clerk or designee to the Inspectors of Election on Election Day.
Budget Vote/Election Information
The vote upon the appropriation of the necessary funds to meet the estimated expenditures or for any propositions involving the expenditure of money or the authorizing of levy of taxes, as well as the election of members of the Board of Education shall be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in the Room 203, Hancock CSD, 67 Education Lane between the hours of 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
Running for School Board
Petitions nominating candidates for the offices of members of the Board of Education must be filed with the Clerk of the District not later than April 21, 2025, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The following vacancies are to be filled:
A three-year term (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2028) presently held by Nick Hazen
A three-year term (May 21, 2025 – June 30, 2028) to fill the vacant seat last held by Katt Judd
Louise Adelia Read Memorial Library Board of Trustees vacancy to be filled:
A five-year term commencing ending June 30, 2030, presently held by Margaret Hall
Each petition must be directed to the Clerk of the District, be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the district and shall state the name and physical address of the candidate and the name and physical address of each signer.
Eligibility Requirements
Generally, school board candidates must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, qualified voters in the school district, and able to read and write. They must be residents of their districts continuously for one year before the election. They cannot be employed by the board on which they will serve or live in the same household with a family member who is also a member of the same school board.
Qualified Voters of the School District are:
(1) a citizen of the United States of America, (2) eighteen years of age or older, and (3) resident within the school district for a period of thirty (30) days next preceding the annual meeting.
