Establishes the policies for the operation of the District
Recruits and hires the Superintendent
Sets goals and objectives to achieve educational progress
Evaluates the effectiveness of district programs and services
Adopts and monitors a budget consistent with educational needs and community resources
Communicates the needs and progress of the District to the community, educational governing Boards, and Legislators
Acts on recommendations set forth by the Superintendent regarding financial, personnel, operational, and curriculum items
The Board of Education establishes policies and adopts regulations for the operation of the District's schools. Its five members serve without pay and are elected by the qualified voters of the district for a three-year term. Responsibility for administering board policy is vested in the Superintendent.
The Board meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:00 in the board room of the Hancock Central School. All district residents are invited to attend these educational and business meetings and to participate in discussions.
The Open Forum with community and/or staff allows for questions and comments regarding items on the agenda. persons wishing to speak should identify themselves and any organization they may be representing at the meeting. Comments must be limited to five minutes and relate to school matters. The Board does not generally respond immediately to issues raised, but will direct the administration to research the matter.
The Board meets in Executive Session to discuss personnel matters, labor negotiations, and other matters that are confidential, as defined by the Open Meeting Law of the State of New York. All Executive Sessions are closed to the public and no official action may be taken unless permitted by law. Executive Sessions may only be held by resolution at a regularly scheduled and advertised open meeting.
